Veteran politician and esteemed elder statesman, Alhaji Tanko Yakasai, has announced his withdrawal from all political groups and parties, stating his primary focus is now on contributing ideas for national development and unity.
Speaking to journalists in Kano on Wednesday, the 98-year-old political figure emphasised that partisan politics is no longer his concern at this stage of his life.
“I am not a member of any political group or organization. My interest is now centered on promoting ideas and initiatives that will move our country forward,” Yakasai affirmed.
While stepping back from active political affiliations, Yakasai has previously voiced support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration and consistently advocates for a united Nigeria.
His long and distinguished career spans Nigeria’s entire post-independence political history.

Yakasai served as a commissioner in Kano State under the military administration of Audu Bako and later as Special Adviser on National Assembly Matters to President Shehu Shagari during the Second Republic.
He was also a founding member of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), a prominent northern political and cultural group.
Throughout his decades in public life, Yakasai has built a reputation for his unwavering commitment to democracy, equity, and good governance.
Despite his non-partisan stance, Alhaji Yakasai’s voice continues to hold significant weight on national issues.
In a previous reflection titled “A message to those planning to rig elections,” the nonagenarian famously warned against electoral malpractice and urged younger generations to uphold democratic ideals.
