Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has delivered a scathing critique of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, accusing the Nigerian leader of feeding the nation with manipulated economic data and failing to live up to his promise of putting food on Nigerians’ tables.
Obi, in a statement on his X account on Monday monitored by Breakingng.com, recalled how during the 2023 presidential campaign, Tinubu had mocked him for relying on data and statistics to present his vision for the country.

“In November 2022, while campaigning in Delta State, the then APC Presidential Candidate, Bola Tinubu, now the President, berated the other Presidential Candidate (Peter Obi),” Obi said. “He was ashamed to call my name, saying, ‘Na statistics we go chop? All I want is to put food on the table of Nigerians.’”

Two years into Tinubu’s administration, Obi argued that the president has not only failed to deliver on that promise but has plunged more Nigerians into hunger and hardship.
“Now, two years into his 4-year tenure, Nigeria is classified as one of the hungriest nations in the world with millions of Nigerians not knowing where their next meal will come from,” Obi stated.
He further accused Tinubu of using deceptive economic metrics to mislead Nigerians and gloss over the real conditions faced by citizens.
“President Tinubu is now overfeeding Nigerians with wrong statistics — from wrong unemployment figures, wrong inflation figures, and now GDP rebasing — all to put a positive spin on our deteriorating economic and household conditions,” Obi said.
Obi, a former Governor of Anambra State known for his emphasis on accountability and data-driven governance, criticized Tinubu’s style of leadership as lacking the core elements needed to rescue Nigeria from its economic malaise.
“Governance is not rocket science. It’s not a gamble. Like I have always reiterated, it requires sincerity of purpose, character, competence, capacity, and compassion,” he declared.
Obi’s remarks come amid rising inflation, food scarcity, and an increasingly difficult standard of living in the country, as many Nigerians continue to grapple with high fuel prices, naira devaluation, and soaring cost of essential goods.
As discontent grows among citizens, analysts suggest that Obi’s recent comments could signal a renewed political offensive ahead of the 2027 elections, positioning him once again as a strong voice of opposition against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
