Tragedy as 19-year-old girl commits suicide over low JAMB score

Date:

A 19-year-old girl, Opesusi Faith Timilehin, had reportedly committed suicide after ingesting ‘Push Out’ rat poison following her disappointment after scoring 190 in the recently released Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

Timilehin, originally from Abeokuta, was residing with her elder sister in the Odogunyan area of Ikorodu, Lagos State.

Grief-stricken neighbours and community members described her as “gentle and humble,” mourning the sudden loss.

A family insider disclosed that Timilehin had applied to study Microbiology and had also sat for the UTME the previous year.

“She said her last year’s result was better than this year’s,” one of her close allies (name withheld) told The Guardian.

Witnesses recounted that Timilehin began showing signs of distress at her sister’s workplace when she suddenly asked for palm oil, which is commonly used as an antidote for poisoning.

Her request reportedly puzzled her sister, who was unaware of what had happened at the time. It wasn’t until her condition worsened that alarm was raised, drawing the attention of nearby residents.

On their way to the hospital, Timilehin reportedly confessed that she had ingested poison earlier that day before coming to the office.

Tragically, she was confirmed dead at Kolak Hospital in Odogunyan, shortly before receiving an unexpected notification.

“The shocking revelation is that she was given an admission message via her Gmail yesterday, immediately after she was confirmed dead at Kolak Hospital, Odogunyan, Ikorodu, Lagos,” the source stated.

In a heartbreaking twist, she had been offered provisional admission by JAMB — a message that arrived just 30 minutes after her passing.

Upon learning of the tragedy, her parents travelled from Abeokuta to retrieve her remains for burial.

Locals, overwhelmed with grief and anger, reportedly directed their outrage at JAMB, lamenting the circumstances surrounding the young girl’s death.
