Troops arrest bandit leader linked to murder of Sokoto Emir

Date:

Troops of the 1 Brigade of the Nigerian Army have arrested Bako Wurgi, also known as Baka NaGarba, a suspected notorious bandit leader and arms dealer believed to be behind the abduction and killing of Isa Bawa, the Emir of Gobir in Sokoto State.

The late traditional ruler was abducted in July at the Kwanar Maharba area of Sokoto while returning from an event. He was killed three weeks later after a ransom plea made in a viral video failed.

According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication, Wurgi was captured on December 14 in Shinkafi town, Zamfara State, following intelligence reports that he was receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained in a clash with a rival group.

Troops intercepted him at a hospital around 10 p.m. with multiple cuts and gunshot wounds. While two of his accomplices managed to flee, another individual who assisted in transporting him in a tricycle was taken into custody.
