A somber mood has enveloped the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, following the sudden death of a 300-level Microbiology student, Tochi Attah, who reportedly collapsed while playing football near the Elmada Hostel area on campus.
The tragic event occurred on Monday and has left students and members of the community in shock. Tochi, affectionately called “T-funds” by peers, was the younger brother of Dr. Simon Attah, the All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairman in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State.

News of his passing was formally announced by the President of Useh Youths, Sabastine Aku, who issued a statement on behalf of the Attah family and the Useh community.
“With heavy heart but total submission to God’s will, the Attah family and entire Useh Village sadly announce the passing of our son, brother and friend, Late Tochi Martins (a.k.a ‘T-Funds Exchange’), younger brother to Dr Simon Attah, the current Party chairman All Progressives Congress, Igbo-Etiti LGA of Enugu State,” the statement read.
“He departed suddenly while playing football. May God accept his soul and grant the family comfort during this difficult time.”
Sources close to the deceased disclosed that Tochi had recently begun transitioning from Microbiology to a medical-related course before his untimely death.
When contacted on Tuesday, the university’s Chief Safety Officer, Ken Chukwurah, confirmed the incident, noting that although the late student was not residing in the Elmada Hostel, the university is aware of the occurrence and is looking into the details surrounding it.
“He was our student, but he was not staying at Elmada Hostel. The incident happened on Monday; the school is aware of it. We are still investigating to be sure of what happened and how it happened,” Chukwurah stated.
The university community and the entire Useh Village continue to mourn the unexpected loss of a promising young man whose life was cut short in the most heartbreaking of circumstances.
