Abia State lawmaker and House of Representatives member, Alex Ikwechegh, was captured on video assaulting a Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, who had come to deliver a package to him at his Maitama residence in Abuja on Sunday.
In the viral footage, Ikwechegh, who represents Aba North and South Federal Constituency under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), is seen repeatedly slapping and berating the driver.
The confrontation reportedly began when the driver requested Ikwechegh to collect the delivery—a package of snails—in person.
Ikwechegh, visibly angered, interpreted the driver’s request as a sign of disrespect. “Do you know who I am? I can make you disappear in the whole of Nigeria, and nothing will happen,” he threatened in the video, adding, “I am not going to give this boy one naira of my money.”
The lawmaker also threatened to personally handle the situation, boasting, “I am not going to call my policemen to beat you up; I will do that myself. I will show that I am a big brother to you, tie you up, lie you down, and put you in my generator house.”
When the driver asked for the delivery fee, Ikwechegh responded with multiple slaps, mocking him and daring him to call the police. “Do you know who I am? I just slapped you, and there’s nothing you will do. My name is Honourable Alex Ikwechegh—tell them I slapped you. Call the Inspector General of Police that I slapped you. Record me very well,” he continued.
This incident comes shortly after Ikwechegh’s recent legal victory. In September 2023, the National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal in Umuahia, Abia State, led by Justice Adeyinka Aderibigbe, removed Emeka Nnamani, a Labour Party candidate, and ordered that Ikwechegh, who came second in the 2023 general election, be issued a certificate of return. Nnamani was disqualified due to alleged certificate forgery.
