MTN, Nigeria’s largest telecom operator, has issued a public apology after a sudden 200% increase in the price of its widely-used 15GB data bundle left customers stunned and upset.
The cost of the popular weekly 15GB data plan surged from N2,000 to N6,000, sparking immediate outrage among users, many of whom expressed their frustration on social media on Wednesday.
Responding to the backlash, MTN took to social media on Thursday to acknowledge the growing discontent. In an informal and conversational tone, the company sought to address its customers’ concerns, recognizing the shock many felt after the unexpected price hike.
The message read: “To our 15GB digital bundle lovers, you dey vex. We know. We know how upsetting it must have been to suddenly wake up to a 200% increase on your favourite digital bundle.”

MTN, attempting to lighten the situation, continued: “We could share several reasons and provide explanations, but omo, all that one na story. We don cast. We get it and admit it. Let’s just say na mistake.”
The company urged its customers to move past their anger, adding: “In this love season, don’t stay angry with us. Please forgive and forget. You matter die and we will never stop showing you how much. Let’s continue our relationship. Thank you for your understanding.”
At the moment, MTN is the only telecom company to have raised its prices, but industry experts expect Airtel and Globacom to follow suit after the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) approved a 50% tariff increase in January.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has strongly condemned the price hikes, calling for an immediate reversal of the 50% tariff increase implemented by telecom companies.
The NLC’s stance adds to the mounting pressure on telecom operators, as Nigerians voice their discontent over the rising costs.
