Wike slams women’s walkout on first lady in Port Harcourt

Date:

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has criticized the actions of a group of women who staged a walkout on Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, during an event in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital.

According to Wike, the women are supporters of the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara.

Wike, who described the incident as a disgrace to Rivers State, offered an apology to the First Lady and President Bola Tinubu.

In a statement released by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Mr. Lere Olayinka, Wike expressed his regret over the occurrence.

He stated, “Insult on anyone representing the First Lady of Nigeria in an event is a direct insult on the office of the President and Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and as a leader in Rivers State, I apologise.”

Olayinka revealed that the disruption occurred during the Renewed Hope Initiative empowerment programme, which was organized by the First Lady’s office and held at the EUI Event Centre in the GRA area of Port Harcourt.

He noted that some former local government vice chairpersons led the group responsible for the walkout. The programme was designed to support 500 women in Rivers State with various empowerment packages.

Currently on an official visit to China, Wike said the behavior exhibited at the event was both “very disturbing and embarrassing.”

He warned the suspended governor’s allies to stop engaging in actions that undermine the dignity of the state.

Wike also urged Fubara to be transparent about his intentions, particularly in his dealings with President Tinubu, suggesting that inconsistency only hinders the peace process.

He said, “It is not enough to be visiting people to plead for peace. Those who genuinely want peace work and act for it.

“These are the same people pleading for peace, but at the same time doing things that are contrary to what they are pleading for.

“How can you say you want peace and at the same time, you are sponsoring people to insult everyone, including the president and his wife?

“All those shenanigans won’t bring peace, and I am sure they know that, because they are not sincere with their up and down pleadings for peace.”

Wike concluded by disassociating himself and his followers from the actions of the protesters, affirming that their conduct does not reflect the values of Rivers people.

“As for me and those who subscribe to my leadership, we condemn in totality that yesterday’s show of shame and we apologise to our First Lady for the embarrassing conduct of those few women who do not represent the characters and ideals of the people of Rivers State.”
