Wizkid, Burna Boy, Tiwa, others set storms  Greater Lagos Countdown

The Greater Lagos Countdown, held on Wednesday at the iconic Tafawa Balewa Square, was a dazzling celebration that welcomed the new year with explosive energy, unforgettable performances, and the electrifying presence of Nigeria’s finest musical talent. The event, organized by the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, became a night for the history books, as A-list stars including Wizkid, Burna Boy, Tiwa Savage, and a host of others lit up the stage for a diverse and thrilling audience.

Fans from all walks of life gathered at the bustling square, united in their love for music and anticipation for what was set to be an epic night. The annual end-of-year extravaganza featured a star-studded lineup that included global icons like Wizkid, Burna Boy, Tiwa Savage, Niniola, Olamide, Adewale Ayuba, Runtown, Bnxn, Naira Marley, Seyi Vibez, and more.

Wizkid kicked things off with his signature charisma, getting the crowd to sing along to his chart-topping hits, while Burna Boy brought his trademark blend of energy and passion, delivering an electrifying performance that had fans dancing in unison. Tiwa Savage, the undisputed queen of Afrobeats, captivated the audience with her sultry voice and dynamic stage presence, proving once again why she reigns supreme in the industry.

Niniola took the stage next, treating the crowd to a powerful, soulful set that showcased her incredible vocal range and emotional depth. Fuji legend Adewale Ayuba then transported the audience into a frenzy with his classic tracks like “Ejo” and “Ijo Fuji,” delivering a high-octane performance that blended traditional sounds with modern flair.

The excitement continued with Nigerian star Nice, who brought back his iconic “Alapomeji” vibes, while Runtown and Seyi Vibez gave unforgettable performances that had the crowd jumping and vibing late into the night.

The event wasn’t just about the music – it was also a moment of unity, as Lagosians celebrated the resilience and strength of their city. In a heartwarming moment, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu took to the stage to thank residents for their perseverance throughout 2024. Adding some lighthearted fun, host Gbenga Adeyinka, the renowned comedian, gave Governor Sanwo-Olu a playful lesson in the popular ‘Oblee’ dance moves, bringing smiles and laughter to the eager crowd.

With its thrilling performances, high-energy atmosphere, and memorable moments, the Greater Lagos Countdown solidified its place as one of the most anticipated and significant events of the year. 

The night ended with the promise of new beginnings, as Lagos once again proved to the world that its cultural vibrancy and musical excellence continue to shine bright on the global stage.

Sanwo-Olu said: “It is indeed another honour to be here at the Tafawa Balewa Square for the countdown 2024 to 2025. Last year, we were all together, and this year, even bigger, better and brighter.

“We are all together at the Tafawa Balewa Square for the countdown to the year 2025. I want to say that indeed this outgoing year was a year of tremendous opportunities for the young.

“It is a year that you have shown true resilience that makes you true Lagosians. If we are together we can succed together.

“So, for your resilience and productivity, I want to say thank you for staying with our government throughout the year 2024, and we wish all of us as we go into 2025 that the very best will happen to each and everyone of us.

“2025 will be a better year for you, for you and for you. To my people in Ajeromi, Ajegunle, Victoria Island, Ajah, Ibeji-Lekki, Ojokoro, Oworoshoki, we will see you bigger and better in 2025.”
