The Senate caucus of the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has expressed its backing for the proposed coalition of opposition parties in preparation for the 2027 general elections.
This decision follows a call from former Vice President and PDP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Atiku Abubakar, for a united opposition front to contest against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming elections.

Earlier this year, Atiku announced the establishment of an opposition coalition aimed at challenging the APC’s dominance.
“The caucus observes the synthesisation of ideas and creating a harmony of ideals will further the beauty of democracy,” the statement read.
However, the caucus emphasized that any coalition should be led by political parties rather than individuals.
“As the largest opposition party, the PDP’s umbrella is big enough to accommodate all persons desirous of coalition,” stated the Minority Leader of the PDP in the Senate, Sen. Abba Moro, on Tuesday.
Moro highlighted that if a coalition is deemed necessary, the PDP should take the initiative, underscoring the party’s strength and competitiveness.
“In all nooks and crannies of Nigeria, there are PDP members. The caucus asserts that from the current challenges within the party, a renewed and vibrant organization will emerge, providing Nigeria with a viable alternative to the ruling party.
“The caucus, therefore, calls on all party members to re-dedicate themselves, reaffirm their commitment, and show steadfast loyalty to the party to safeguard democracy in Nigeria.”
