Anambra APC guber aspirant, Paul Chukwuma, dumps party ahead of primary

Date:

In a surprising political move, Paul Chukwuma, a prominent governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State, has officially resigned from the party and withdrawn from the upcoming primary election set for April 5, 2025.

Chukwuma, who had been a significant contender for the governorship ticket, communicated his decision in a formal resignation letter addressed to the APC chairman of Ward 2, Umueri, in Anambra East Local Government Area.

While he did not provide specific reasons for his departure, Chukwuma expressed unwavering support for the APC’s vision and President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

He also affirmed his commitment to the values and goals that the party upholds, stressing his dedication to the vision of a prosperous and secure Anambra.

“I write to formally tender my resignation as a card-carrying member of the All Progressives Congress,” Chukwuma stated in his letter.

“Rest assured of my support to our shared progressive ideas as I will devote more time to pursuing the realization of a safe and prosperous Anambra State of our dream.”

This move marks a significant shift in the Anambra governorship race, as Chukwuma becomes the second APC aspirant to withdraw from the contest.

Just days before, Chukwuma Umeoji, a former member of the House of Representatives, had also announced his exit from the race, citing extensive consultations with his supporters across the state.

As a result of these withdrawals, the APC’s governorship field has narrowed, leaving Nicholas Ukachukwu, another former federal lawmaker, and Valentine Ozigbo, the 2021 governorship candidate from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as key contenders.

Other remaining aspirants on the APC ticket include Obiora Okonkwo, Johnbosco Onunkwo, and Edozie Madu.

The party’s primary will proceed using an indirect method, which, according to APC National Secretary Ajibola Basiru, was adopted to ensure a more inclusive and streamlined selection process.

This decision is in line with the party’s aim of fostering unity and ensuring broad representation within the Anambra State chapter.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has already set the date for the governorship election in Anambra for November 8, 2025, making the race increasingly competitive as party leaders prepare for a heated contest.
