Defection: Suswan doubtful if PDP can survive before 2027

Date:

Former Governor of Benue State and serving Senator, Gabriel Suswam, has raised alarm over the deteriorating state of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), cautioning that without urgent intervention from its leadership, the party risks disintegration before the 2027 general elections.

At the center of the PDP’s internal turmoil is an unresolved dispute regarding the position of national secretary.

This power struggle has further exposed deep divisions within the party.

In a recent political shake-up, the PDP suffered major losses in Delta State, where Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his predecessor Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, and other influential members defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The mass defection is widely seen as a pivotal moment that could reshape the political dynamics of the state.

Speaking during an interview on Arise TV’s The Morning Show on Tuesday, Suswam described the party’s current situation as dire.

He said, “A lot of people are hanging on, waiting to see the ultimate end of this party.”

According to him, many party faithfuls have grown disillusioned, losing faith in the PDP’s ability to recover from its internal crisis.

Suswam noted that a rescue effort is underway, spearheaded by a coalition of PDP governors and former governors under the leadership of former Senate President Bukola Saraki.

He said, “Whether there is light at the end of the tunnel in the efforts made by Senator Saraki will be seen in the next two weeks. For now, I would say that PDP is it in the hospital? Yes. Is it in the ICU to some extent? Yes, it is. Can it be rescued? Yes, if the proper medicine is applied.”

The senator likened the PDP’s current predicament to a patient in critical condition, stressing that unless Saraki’s intervention succeeds, the party’s chances of survival remain uncertain.
