Umar Damagum, the acting national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Wednesday responded to the latest development going in the party following exit of key members of the party including Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and the former President of the Nigerian Senate, David Mark to form alliance with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), as part of a broader coalition effort.

Speaking at the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja after leading a meeting of the National Working Committee (NWC), Damagum declared: “We remain united despite all the challenges. We have sat down to discuss all thorny issues and trash it out today.”
He noted that the party’s scheduled NEC meeting would still hold on July 23–25.
“To APC, I want to send a message that you can continue to harass, harass, and buy our members. But the 2027 election is between Nigerians and you.”
Damagum criticized the current state of the country, citing widespread hunger and insecurity, and urged the nation’s leaders to adopt policies that reflect the people’s needs.
“We are not conquered. We are law-abiding citizens. We deserve to be heard,” he said. “For democracy to strive, people must say their minds. People should be listened to and policies should be people-oriented. ”The meeting had strong attendance, including key figures like Deputy National Chairman (South) Taofeek Arapaja, National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba, Deputy National Chairman (Southeast) Ali Odefa, and National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu.
Damagum emphasized the PDP’s resilience and long-standing legacy in Nigerian politics, pointing to its internal conflict resolution mechanisms: “We know our problems and we solve it within ourselves.”
Addressing those who are considering leaving the party, he stated: “If they feel it is better to leave, I will wish them good luck. But I know they will run come running back.”
He also issued a warning to members who are undermining the party’s image: “We are drawing a line for those that go to demarket the party. We will watch them and take appropriate actions at the right time.”
He concluded with a rallying call for loyalty and advocacy: “If you believe in this party, you should be an ambassador that protects the fortunes that this party has given to the citizens of this country when it was there.”
