INEC officially recognizes Abure as Labour Party chair

Date:

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially acknowledged Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP) and Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Recent checks indicate that INEC has updated its website to include these appointments.

Additionally, Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim has been designated as the National Secretary of the Labour Party.

INEC stated that the recognition of the Labour Party officials was “based on an order of court,” but did not specify whether a similar court order was responsible for Anyanwu’s recognition.

Last month, the Supreme Court reversed previous decisions made by the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal that had ousted Abure from his role as LP chairman.

The Supreme Court determined that the matter was an internal party issue, not one for the courts to adjudicate.

Following this ruling, Abure has maintained his claim to the party leadership, asserting that the judgment affirmed that his position was not subject to judicial review.

In the same month, Abia State Governor Alex Otti presented a Certified True Copy (CTC) of the Supreme Court ruling to INEC, stating that the purpose of his visit was to foster “clarity, mutual understanding, and institutional alignment regarding the LP’s current structure.”

Governor Otti and the LP’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, have expressed support for a Caretaker Committee led by Senator Nenadi Usman, arguing that the Supreme Court’s ruling indicated Abure’s removal.

An INEC source has clarified that Abure’s name was reinstated after the commission reviewed the CTC of the judgment. The source explained that the Supreme Court did not address the core issue but merely stated that the lower courts lacked the authority to hear the case.

This effectively restored the situation to its previous state, referred to as the “status quo ante bellum.”

In a related ruling, the Supreme Court also overturned lower court decisions that had removed Senator Anyanwu from his position as PDP secretary.

Prior to this ruling, there was a leadership conflict between Anyanwu and Mr. Sunday Ude-Okoye, who had the support of several PDP governors. The apex court reiterated that this matter was an internal party issue and that the lower courts “had no jurisdiction to have entertained the matter ab initio.”
