Senator Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila, who represents Kano South Senatorial District, has officially announced his defection from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Confirming the move to journalists in Kano, the former presidential aide under Muhammadu Buhari emphasized that his decision was driven by a desire to better serve the interests of his constituents.
“Yes, the reports are true. I have defected to the APC. Politics is local, and my priority remains the wellbeing and progress of the people I represent,” he said.

Sumaila’s defection comes weeks after he and three other lawmakers—Kabiru Alhassan Rurum (Rano/Kibiya), Ali Madakin Gini (Dala), and Sani Abdullahi Rogo (Rogo/Karaye)—were suspended by a faction of the NNPP led by Hashimu Dungurawa over alleged anti-party activities.
At the time, Sumaila dismissed the suspension as politically motivated and insisted he belonged to the authentic NNPP faction symbolized by the “fruit and basket” logo.
His move to the APC is expected to further reshape Kano’s political dynamics ahead of the 2027 elections.
