Members endorsing Tinubu will face stiff sanctions – PDP

Date:

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has issued a firm warning to some of its members over what it described as “persistent anti-party activities,” particularly in relation to open endorsements of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.

In a statement released by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP said it had carefully reviewed recent actions by certain prominent members whose behavior poses a grave threat to the unity and survival of the party.

“The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) @OfficialPDPNig has reviewed the anti-party activities of certain members of the Party particularly those endorsing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for re-election in 2027,” Ologunagba stated.

He expressed concern over what he described as “persistent public media outbursts” and public declarations by some PDP figures expressing support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its presidential candidate for the next general election.

“Of serious concern is the persistent public media outbursts against our Party by some prominent members whose actions and utterances including their public declaration of support and willingness to work for the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 Presidential election in violation of the provision of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017) constitute a serious threat to the stability and sustenance of our Party.”

The PDP pointed to Section 10 (6) of its constitution, which explicitly forbids members from aligning with other political parties or groups in a manner that undermines the PDP or any of its elected officials.

“Specifically, Section 10 (6) of the PDP Constitution provides that ‘NO MEMBER of the Party SHALL align with other Parties or groups to undermine the Party or any of its elected government’,” Ologunagba emphasized.

According to the NWC, these actions have already inflicted serious damage on the party’s internal cohesion, causing “division, disaffection and heavy hemorrhaging of members”, and could further erode the PDP’s electoral prospects if left unchecked.

“Such anti-party activities have continued to impact negatively on the PDP leading to division, disaffection and heavy hemorrhaging of members with the capacity to diminish our Party’s electoral fortune if not immediately checked,” he warned.

In response, the party’s leadership invoked Section 59 (1) of its constitution to issue what it called a “strong reprimand” to those involved. The PDP warned that unless the affected members immediately retrace their steps, they risk facing stiffer disciplinary action.

“In the light of the foregoing and the instancy of protecting and preserving the existence of our Party and its electoral fortune, the NWC, pursuant to the provisions of Section 59 (1) of the PDP Constitution hereby issues a strong reprimand against such anti-party activities and cautions those involved to retrace their steps or face stiffer sanctions as provided in the PDP Constitution.”

The statement concluded with a rallying call to all PDP members to maintain party discipline and focus on the upcoming National Convention, scheduled for November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.

“The NWC charges all members of the Party to remain loyal, focused and continue to work assiduously towards the successful conduct of the PDP National Convention scheduled to hold on the 15th and 16th November, 2025 in Ibadan, the Oyo State Capital.”

This latest development signals a renewed effort by the PDP leadership to reassert control and discipline within its ranks, as it prepares for what is shaping up to be a high-stakes political season ahead of the 2027 elections.
