Jerry Gana, a prominent figure and founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has revealed that he is spearheading an internal initiative within the party to identify a formidable presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.
Recently, Gana, a former Minister of Information, disclosed that the PDP is actively making moves to bring Peter Obi—who contested the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party (LP)—back into its fold.

Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, had formally resigned from the PDP on May 25, 2022, just days before the party’s presidential primary, which was slated for May 28 of the same year.
Following his departure, Obi joined the Labour Party on May 27, 2022, where he secured the party’s presidential ticket and went on to run for president in the 2023 elections.
During an appearance on Prime Time, a programme aired on Arise Television on Wednesday, Gana spoke highly of the PDP’s readiness for the upcoming electoral cycle.
He expressed confidence in the party’s growing appeal and hinted that its strength might discourage rivals from contesting the next presidential election.
He also reiterated the party’s ongoing efforts to lure Obi back into its ranks, even as the former governor is being courted by other political groups like the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
“The PDP is on the ground. I’m a researcher, and I research opinions. In the northern states, Peter Obi under the PDP will defeat any candidate because our people are very fair-minded and just,” Gana said.
“We are reaching out to Peter Obi. Because I’m leading a search team and there are many brilliant people, Peter may be good, but we have somebody better. So, we are searching,” he said.
Gana also acknowledged that the PDP’s handling of events surrounding Obi’s exit in 2022 may not have been ideal. He reflected on what he believed could have been a more strategic decision.
“We made a mistake in 2023. If I were Atiku, I would say, ‘Peter, it is now your turn; I would give you a vice-president,’ but he didn’t,” he said.
