PDP slams Tinubu over insecurity, economic collapse, threat to democracy

Date:

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has issued a scathing condemnation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, citing worsening insecurity, economic collapse, and what it described as an orchestrated assault on Nigeria’s democracy.

This rebuke was contained in a communiqué released at the end of the party’s 99th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held Tuesday, May 27, 2025, in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

The PDP NEC, which comprises top leaders of the party across the country, said it thoroughly examined the state of the nation and the internal affairs of the party before arriving at several weighty resolutions.

In its statement, the NEC decried what it termed “the sorry and melancholic state of affairs of our Nation under the irredeemably exploitative, insensitive and anti-people All Progressives Congress (APC) administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

The opposition party expressed particular outrage over rising insecurity, which it said has reached unprecedented levels under Tinubu’s watch. “NEC condemns the worsening insecurity; the wanton killings, banditry, kidnapping, marauding of communities and other acts of terrorism in various parts of our country, emboldened by President Tinubu’s apparent negligence and abdication of his Constitutional duty to ensure the safety and security of the nation and her citizens,” the communiqué read.

The NEC also lamented the economic suffering endured by Nigerians, attributing it to what it called “ill-advised and ill-implemented policies” by the Tinubu-led administration.

“NEC also laments the worsening economic hardship and extreme poverty in the country occasioned by the hike in fuel price, wanton increase in electricity tariff, multiple taxes and unexplained charges on services,” the party said, warning that these policies have led to the collapse of the productive sector, closure of millions of businesses, and massive job losses.

The party further accused the Tinubu administration of “policy inconsistency, wholesale corruption, massive treasury-looting, budget padding and diversion of public funds,” stating that these have eroded investor confidence and set Nigeria on a path of “infrastructural retrogression.”

Perhaps most striking was the PDP’s warning about what it sees as a systematic attempt by the ruling APC to snuff out democracy. “NEC stands in firm resistance to the sinister plot by the Tinubu-led APC to turn Nigeria into a one-Party totalitarian state as evidenced in the desperate attempts to stifle and annihilate opposition parties through open siege, threats and intimidation of opposition figures and institutions of democracy in Nigeria,” the statement warned.

“It is clear that this plot is borne out of APC’s mortal fear of inevitable defeat in 2027 due to its dismal failure in government,” the communiqué added.Despite the mounting national concerns, the PDP affirmed its unity and readiness to reposition itself for the future.

“The successful convening of the 99th NEC meeting clearly communicates our Party’s unity and focus despite the challenges,” the NEC asserted.

As part of its internal restructuring, the NEC ratified the composition of key committees ahead of its upcoming National Convention, scheduled for Thursday, August 28 to Saturday, August 30, 2025.

Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State will chair the National Convention Committee, with Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke as Vice Chairman and Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah as Secretary.

The Zoning Committee will be chaired by Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri, with Zamfara’s Dauda Lawal as Vice Chairman and Plateau Governor Caleb Mutfwang as Secretary. The NEC also acknowledged a resolution from the PDP South East Zonal Executive concerning the office of the National Secretary, adding that the matter would be deliberated at the next NEC meeting slated for Monday, June 30, 2025.

Concluding its communique, the PDP NEC reaffirmed its commitment to democracy and the rule of law, stating: “NEC restates our Party’s belief in Democracy, the Rule of Law and the Supremacy of the Will of the people as expressed through their free and unhindered democratic participation in multi-party politics and governance.”

“NEC reassures Nigerians that the PDP remains strong, resilient, united and determined now, more than ever before in leading the charge to rescue our Nation from the vicious grip of the APC.”

The party’s bold and defiant posture suggests that political temperatures in Nigeria may rise sharply ahead of the 2027 general elections.
