Peter Obi’s Labour Party in Anambra dead, says Soludo

Date:

Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has declared that the outcome of Saturday’s by-elections in the state proves that both the Labour Party (LP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have lost relevance in Anambra politics.

Speaking on Sunday at a victory gathering in Nanka, where the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) celebrated its triumph in the polls, Soludo took a swipe at opposition parties and their supporters.

He particularly directed criticism at one of his predecessors, Peter Obi, who had thrown his weight behind ADC candidates during the election.

According to the governor, the ADC has no political footing in the state.

“ADC does not exist in Anambra. We showed it yesterday (Saturday). Labour Party is dead,” Soludo remarked to loud applause from party faithful dressed in APGA colours and insignia.

The governor argued that the by-election was meant to serve as a test of strength for the ADC coalition in Anambra, but voters rejected them overwhelmingly. “The people spoke overwhelmingly with over 75%. APGA is our movement,” he added.

Obi, who ran for president in 2023 on the Labour Party platform, has in recent months associated himself with the ADC coalition that hopes to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.

Soludo, however, has consistently opposed Obi’s ambitions.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced APGA’s Emmanuel Nwachukwu as the winner of the Anambra South Senatorial by-election, where he polled 90,408 votes to defeat APC’s Azuka Okwuosa, who secured 19,847 votes, while ADC’s Donald Amangbo trailed with 2,889 votes.

Nwachukwu’s victory means he will succeed the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who passed away in July 2024.

Similarly, APGA’s Ifeoma Azikiwe was declared the winner of the Onitsha North Constituency 1 seat in the Anambra State House of Assembly. While addressing APGA members, Soludo emphasized the significance of the Onitsha North result.

“Onitsha North Constituency happens to be the constituency of the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party. That’s his state constituency; he lives in Onitsha,” he said.

He noted that several top opposition politicians rallied against APGA during the election but were ultimately rejected by voters.

“And all of them came. The senator representing the zone came. The senator representing Anambra Central threw himself into the ring. Members of the House of Representatives threw themselves into the ring. It looked like this was an allied force. Who were they coming against? The people. But the people of Anambra spoke.

“They wanted to use it as a test case for the new concoction called ADC in Anambra, but that election was won by APGA; we won with about 77%, a very emphatic statement. The signal we sent was that both ADC and Labour Party are dead in Anambra,” Soludo stated.

The governor, who once served as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), is currently preparing for his re-election bid under APGA in the November 8, 2025, governorship contest.

Soludo also recently visited President Bola Tinubu in Abuja, stressing that his two-decade-long friendship with the president was nothing he would ever apologize for.
