Tinubu’s two years in office “massive disappointment”, says PDP

Date:

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has launched a critique of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, describing his first two years in office as a “massive disappointment” and a “nightmarish experience” for Nigerians.

The opposition party leveled these allegations in a statement released by its National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, on the second anniversary of Tinubu’s inauguration on Tuesday.

In the statement, the PDP accused the Tinubu-led All Progressives Congress (APC) government of overseeing a period marked by economic suffocation, worsening insecurity, widespread corruption, and an “arrogance in failure” that has left Nigerians disillusioned and impoverished.“

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has appraised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s two years in office and asserts that his administration is a massive disappointment,” Ologunagba said.“

The Party describes the last two years as nightmarish, adding that Nigerians have gone through hell under the insensitive Tinubu-led All Progressives Congress (APC) government which evidentially holds no good for the citizens.”

The PDP warned that President Tinubu must take urgent action to address spiraling insecurity, reverse “economically suffocating” policies, and end what it described as wholesale corruption, reckless spending, and totalitarian tendencies.

The party took aim at Tinubu’s controversial economic decisions, particularly the abrupt removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the Naira, blaming them for the country’s current economic crisis.

“Any government that cares for the wellbeing of the people and has an idea of macro-economic policy management would have reckoned that an abrupt increase in petrol price and devaluation of the Naira… would cripple the productive sector, inflame high costs, crash millions of businesses, trigger mass job loss, escalate poverty, hunger, hardship, insecurity and hopelessness across the country,” the PDP stated.

Ologunagba cited sharp rises in the cost of living under Tinubu’s administration: the Naira has plunged from N167 to over N1,600 to the US dollar, while petrol prices have soared from N87 to over N1,000 per litre.

He added that inflation is nearing 40%, youth unemployment stands at over 42%, and the country is facing an “acute food shortage and frightening rise in criminality.”

Most disturbingly, the PDP claimed that more than 600,000 Nigerians have lost their lives to terrorism and banditry since Tinubu assumed office in May 2023.

“More than 600,000 Nigerians have been killed by terrorists and bandits who are emboldened by the APC administration’s apparent negligence and failure to ensure the safety and security of the nation and her citizens,” the statement claimed.

The opposition party further alleged that multinational corporations are fleeing the country due to economic uncertainties and deteriorating infrastructure, while the government focuses on luxurious spending and suppressing dissent.

“Instead of listening to our Party and other well-meaning Nigerians, the Tinubu administration resorted to multiple taxes, exploitative charges and reckless foreign borrowing… with no corresponding development project or programme that benefits the people.”

“More distressing is that while Nigerians suffer, the APC is obsessed with turning our country into a one-Party state, while frittering the nation’s scarce resources for acquisition of jets, pricey yacht, luxury mansions, expensive foreign trips and lavish lifestyle.”

As President Tinubu marks two years in office, the PDP urged him to abandon “rhetoric and false performance claims” and use the remainder of his term to make meaningful changes.

“Mr. President should take advantage of the remaining two years of his administration to redeem his image by addressing the issue of insecurity, review all suffocating policies to bring down the price of petroleum products and shore up the value of the Naira while engaging more skillful hands to manage the nation’s economy,” the party advised.

Looking ahead to 2027, the PDP called on Nigerians to remain hopeful and united in their resolve to bring change through the ballot box.

“Our Party urges Nigerians not to give up hope at this trying time but continue to rally on the platform of the PDP in preparation to vote out the APC and its woes in 2027,” Ologunagba concluded.

The presidency has yet to respond to the PDP’s statement.
