Wike blasts Fubara over letter to Rivers Assembly

Date:

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has sharply slammed a letter sent by Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, to the state House of Assembly, requesting an audience with lawmakers.

Wike dismissed the letter as “useless” during a live broadcast with journalists in Abuja on Wednesday, emphasizing that the request was an insult to the legislative body.

The letter, reportedly linked to discussions regarding the implementation of a Supreme Court ruling on the state’s political affairs, was described by Wike as an ineffective and insincere move.

He questioned why Fubara would choose to send a formal letter, particularly signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), when he should have taken a more direct approach with the lawmakers.

“Why write a letter after having a frosty relationship with an arm of government? If you’re a good politician, you should know better. You don’t write letters; you make a phone call and set a meeting,” Wike said.

He further criticized Fubara’s actions, calling them “rubbish” and accusing him of playing to the gallery rather than showing true political maturity.

Wike also emphasized that Speaker Martins Amaewhule and other members of the Rivers State House of Assembly are not mere subordinates of the governor and should be treated with respect.

According to Wike, Fubara should have personally reached out to Amaewhule and his team to arrange a meeting instead of relying on formal correspondence.

The tension between Fubara and the Assembly follows the Supreme Court’s ruling on February 28, 2025, which addressed the political situation in Rivers State. The court unanimously upheld the validity of the Assembly led by Speaker Amaewhule, dismissing Fubara’s appeal to challenge its authority.

The court also imposed strict sanctions, including barring key federal agencies from releasing funds to Rivers State due to the government’s failure to comply with court orders.

Additionally, the Supreme Court nullified the local government election conducted in Rivers State on October 5, 2024, declaring it invalid. In response, Fubara vowed to fully implement the court’s verdict and directed the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) to arrange for a fresh election, which is now set for August 9, 2025.

Amid these developments, the Secretary to the State Government, Tammy Danagogo, sent a letter on March 7, 2025, requesting a meeting with the Assembly to discuss the re-presentation of the 2025 budget and other peace talks.

However, the Assembly rejected the formal invitation, urging the governor to follow a more appropriate channel for such communication.
