Wike blasts PDP stakeholders over betrayal, pulls out of agreements

Date:

In a searing and candid statement titled “PDP Crisis: My Position,” the former Governor of Rivers State and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has accused key stakeholders in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of dishonesty, betrayal, and deliberate sabotage of internal agreements meant to restore unity within the party.

He made this known in a statement made available to Vanguard on Sunday. Wike, a leading figure in the influential G5 faction, said that since the conclusion of the 2023 general elections, the PDP has been “wantonly swinging from one part of a slippery precipice to another, owing fundamentally to dishonesty and lack of trust amongst its key stakeholders.”

In his detailed exposé, Wike claimed that sincere efforts were made to salvage the party’s integrity and rebuild internal harmony.

“To stem this ugly trend, efforts have been made to arrest this pernicious virus of dishonesty and treachery and enthrone fidelity to agreements with a view to stabilizing the party and moving it forward,” he said.

He disclosed that the G5 governors had met in Lagos to resolve the festering issues within the party. At the heart of the conflict, Wike pointed fingers directly at Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde.

“I made it clear to the Governor of Oyo State, H.E. Seyi Makinde, that he was the architect of our problems… he was the chief culprit of this anomaly,” Wike alleged.

Following that meeting, an expanded dialogue was held at the Abuja guest house of former Senate President Bukola Saraki, involving PDP figures including Governors Bala Mohammed, Umaru Fintiri, and Saraki himself.

Wike used the opportunity to air his grievances further, stating, “I made it clear that I had no personal problems with H.E. Bala Mohammed, except that he hides under the facade of Chairman of PDP Governors Forum to serially renege on agreements.”

Despite rising tensions at the meeting, Wike said some resolutions were reached, including the recognition of Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the party’s National Secretary in line with the Supreme Court’s ruling, and the withdrawal of pending legal matters relating to Rivers State.

A reconciliation committee was also formed, headed by Bukola Saraki. However, Wike expressed deep disappointment that those resolutions were almost immediately violated.

“Even before the Bukola Saraki Reconciliation Committee began its work, the gentleman’s agreement we reached at Saraki’s Guest House was already being crudely violated,” he lamented.

He accused Seyi Makinde and Governor Peter Mba of Enugu State of subverting the party’s unity through backdoor dealings. “Seyi Makinde had connived with Peter Mba of Enugu State to orchestrate the summoning of the meeting of so-called South-East leaders to recommend that if Ude Okoye was not adopted as Secretary, they would pull out of the PDP,” Wike revealed, labeling the move as illegitimate and divisive.

The former governor of Rivers State also condemned the action of allowing the Deputy National Secretary to usurp the responsibilities of the National Secretary.

“A letter was written by the Deputy National Secretary, calling for a meeting of the NEC of the party,” he said, branding it a calculated violation.

He further pointed to a recent PDP event in Jos on May 24, 2025, as evidence of the party’s disarray.

“A well-publicised and properly attended zonal elective congress of the PDP was aborted because the letter inviting INEC was signed by the Deputy National Secretary… INEC refused to attend because the proper signatory recognized by law, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, was not a signatory to the invitation notice,” he recounted.

Wike said his long-standing loyalty to the PDP has been tested and dishonored by individuals who have done far less to build the party. “I have been in this party since 1998… none of these persons have done anything close to what I have done to sustain this party,” he asserted.

“What is more painful is that I contributed substantially to most of these governors winning their elections, yet I have not made any personal demands on any of them and I would never do so,” he added, in a tone laced with frustration. As a result of what he sees as repeated breaches of trust, Wike declared that he is withdrawing from all previously reached agreements.

“Most importantly, I had thought that we could keep the trust amongst us, but… I have now firmly decided to pull out of all agreements hitherto reached,” he announced.

In a parting shot that underscores his intent to remain a force within the PDP, Wike concluded: “I have decided to fight on until justice is attained.”

The fallout from Wike’s statement is likely to reverberate across the PDP and deepen existing divisions, raising questions about the future unity and leadership of the main opposition party as the 2027 election approaches.
