Bayern Munich humiliate Auckland City 10-0 in Club World Cup opener

Date:

Bayern Munich launched their Club World Cup campaign with a crushing 10-0 win over Auckland City on Sunday, showcasing their dominance as Jamal Musiala came off the bench to score a blistering second-half hat-trick.

The German giants were ruthless against the part-time side from New Zealand, with Kingsley Coman, Michael Olise, and Thomas Müller each netting twice. Sacha Boey also found the back of the net in a Group C clash that includes Boca Juniors and Benfica.

Harry Kane featured in the starting lineup but failed to add to his goal tally before being replaced just past the hour mark. His substitute, Musiala, took full advantage of the opportunity, scoring three times in just 18 minutes, including a penalty he earned himself.

“We have to remain modest but it was important to be able to say that we took the game seriously,” said Bayern coach Vincent Kompany.

“It was a good first match at the tournament, but of course challenges are going to grow and it’s going to become more difficult.”

Under the intense midday heat of Cincinnati, Bayern wasted no time asserting control. Coman opened the scoring in the sixth minute, marking the tournament’s first goal following a goalless opener between Inter Miami and Al Ahly. Boey and Olise followed up with goals of their own, before Coman grabbed his second within the first 21 minutes.

Veteran forward Müller added a fifth before halftime, and Olise made it 6-0 in added time with a dazzling left-footed effort curled into the far corner—a goal that stood out among the day’s highlights.

Despite trying to hold back the tide after the break, Auckland City’s resistance ultimately crumbled when Musiala entered the pitch. The young German international quickly made his presence felt, finding the net three times, one of which came from the spot after he was brought down.

Müller capped off the rout with Bayern’s 10th goal in the 89th minute, marking his 250th strike for the club and adding another milestone in what is expected to be his final tournament with Bayern.

The lopsided scoreline highlighted the massive disparity between the European powerhouse and their amateur opposition. Auckland City, although 13-time winners of the Oceania Champions League, consist largely of non-professional players, many of whom had to take unpaid leave from work to participate in the tournament.

“This is the reality of football against one of the world’s top teams,” admitted City’s interim coach, Ivan Vicelich.

“It is a dream for players coming from an amateur level to play in this environment.

“We knew it was going to be a very difficult game, playing against one of the top teams in the world, potentially one of the favourites for the Club World Cup, so we are just really proud of the players’ efforts.”

The victory serves as an emphatic opening statement from Bayern, who have twice previously lifted the Club World Cup trophy—in 2013 and 2020 under the old seven-team format.

While Bayern have recorded even larger winning margins in past German Cup fixtures, this 10-0 triumph equals their best-ever result in the Bundesliga, set with an 11-1 demolition of Borussia Dortmund in 1971.

The game also marked the debut of new signing Jonathan Tah, who partnered in central defence following his summer transfer from Bayer Leverkusen.

Next up for Bayern is a highly anticipated clash with Boca Juniors in Miami on Friday, while Auckland City will hope to salvage some pride when they face Benfica in Orlando earlier the same day.
