Chelsea edge past Everton to bolster champions league hopes

Date:

Chelsea took a significant step in their pursuit of a Champions League spot with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Everton at Stamford Bridge.

Although the match carried little consequence for the Toffees, who have already secured their Premier League survival, manager David Moyes will likely be frustrated with his side’s performance.

The Blues dominated much of the first half and made their pressure count when Nicolas Jackson found space on the edge of the area.

Turning swiftly, the striker fired a low shot that nestled into the bottom corner, giving Chelsea a deserved lead. Enzo Maresca’s side, who registered 0.98 expected goals during the match, controlled the tempo early on but struggled to maintain their momentum after the interval.

Everton improved significantly in the second half and came close to drawing level when Dwight McNeil connected with a close-range volley.

However, Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sánchez produced a brilliant diving save to preserve the lead.Although Chelsea eased off in the latter stages, they had done enough to secure all three points.

The victory keeps their European ambitions alive heading into a crucial clash against Liverpool next week.

Meanwhile, Everton will turn their attention to their upcoming fixture against Ipswich Town.
