Dortmund advance to Club World Cup quarter-final after beating Monterrey

Date:

Borussia Dortmund secured a spot in the FIFA Club World Cup quarter-finals following a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Monterrey.

Striker Serhou Guirassy was the difference-maker for the German side, striking twice in the first half with clinical finishes.

Monterrey responded early in the second half through a headed effort by Germán Berterame, but despite their persistent pressure, the Mexican side couldn’t find a second goal.

A late scare came when Sergio Ramos came close to levelling the match with a powerful header that narrowly missed the top corner, but Dortmund held firm to claim the win.

Dortmund will now meet Spanish giants Real Madrid in the quarter-final clash set for Saturday.

However, the much-anticipated showdown between the Bellingham brothers will not materialize, as Jobe Bellingham is suspended due to accumulating two yellow cards in the tournament—the second coming in the 28th minute of this game.
