Felix Agu gets FIFA clearance to represent Nigeria

Date:

The world football governing body, FIFA has officially approved German-born defender Felix Agu to represent Nigeria in international football.

This was announced on Saturday via the Super Eagles’ verified Facebook account, marking a significant development in the player’s career.

The 24-year-old Werder Bremen star is now eligible to feature for Nigeria, as confirmed by the German Football Association (DFB), which clarified that Agu had never played in any official match — senior or junior — for Germany.

“Felix Nnaemeka Agu confirmed ok to play for Nigeria’s @NGSuperEagles. The German FF have written to confirm that the player has never represented them at any official game at the A and Junior level,” the post reads.

Although he previously made two friendly appearances for Germany’s U21 side in 2019, those matches do not hinder his eligibility for a national switch.

Agu, born to Nigerian parents in Germany, has been on the radar of the Nigerian Football Federation for some time. A graduate of VfL Osnabrück’s youth academy, he moved to Werder Bremen in the 2020–21 Bundesliga season and debuted against Bayern Munich in November 2020.

Agu’s 2024–25 season saw him make 22 appearances and score three goals, showcasing his versatility and attacking instincts as a full-back.

Recognizing his value, Bremen renewed his contract in 2022, underlining his role as a core member of the squad.

Following FIFA’s clearance, Agu is now set to join the Super Eagles’ camp for the Unity Cup in London, where Nigeria is scheduled to play Ghana in the semifinal on May 28.

Other participating teams include Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago.
