Liverpool Fight Back to Secure 3-1 Victory Over Southampton

Date:

Liverpool overcame a dramatic first-half setback to defeat Southampton 3-1 on Saturday, extending their Premier League lead to a commanding 16 points.

The Reds were stunned early at Anfield as Will Smallbone gave bottom-placed Southampton a shock lead before the break.

However, Liverpool’s resilience shone through after the interval. Darwin Nunez, often criticized this season, made a vital impact by scoring the equalizer and winning a penalty, which Mohamed Salah coolly converted to give Liverpool the lead.

Salah then sealed the win with another penalty, bringing his tally to 32 goals across all competitions in 2025.

With this crucial win, Liverpool continue their charge toward a record-equalling 20th league title and their first since 2020.

Despite Arsenal having two games in hand—including a key clash against Manchester United on Sunday—the Reds’ form has made them virtually unstoppable this season under Arne Slot’s leadership.

Slot, in his first season since taking over from Jurgen Klopp, has masterminded a thrilling campaign, with Liverpool also eyeing European glory.

They head to Paris on Tuesday to finish the job against Paris Saint-Germain, following a 1-0 victory in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie.

The League Cup final against Newcastle on March 16 is next, where Liverpool will aim to win their first trophy under Slot.

With only one league loss this season, Liverpool now have just nine games remaining to secure the Premier League crown.

Southampton, in contrast, remain in dire straits, still 13 points adrift of safety and on the verge of matching Derby’s Premier League record low points tally of 11 in a season.

Despite the challenges Southampton posed early on, Liverpool’s relentless pursuit of success continues, and they show no signs of slowing down as they inch closer to a potential treble.

In a game that marked Liverpool’s only league fixture in March due to a quirk in the schedule, Curtis Jones was quick to test Southampton’s goalkeeper, firing the Reds’ first shot within 48 seconds and then coming close with a long-range effort that just missed.

Liverpool’s attack looked relentless from the outset, reminiscent of their midweek performance against PSG.
