Newcastle close in on champions league spot with 2-0 victory over Chelsea

Date:

Newcastle United have taken a major step toward securing UEFA Champions League football for next season with a clinical 2-0 victory over Chelsea marking one of their most significant performances of the season.

It was a dream start for the Magpies as Sandro Tonali fired the home side into an early lead just 1 minute and 52 seconds into the match — Newcastle’s fastest-ever Premier League goal against Chelsea.

The Italian midfielder capitalized on a low cross from Jacob Murphy on the right, striking the ball into the turf before it beat Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

The game’s tone was further defined in the 37th minute, when Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson was shown a red card for violent conduct after leading with an elbow in a clash with Newcastle defender Sven Botman.

Initially booked with a yellow, VAR intervened and the decision was upgraded following a monitor review, leaving the Blues with 10 men for over an hour.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, Chelsea emerged from the break showing renewed determination, creating chances through Marc Cucurella and Enzo Fernandez, both of whom forced strong saves from Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope.

The visitors’ best opportunity fell late to Reece James, who rose to meet a sumptuous Malo Gusto cross but headed over from close range — a miss that would come back to haunt Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Bruno Guimarães sealed the result in the 90th minute, his long-range effort taking a deflection on its way past Sanchez to send the St. James’ Park crowd into raptures and secure all three points. Newcastle’s performance outperformed their expected goals of 1.89, highlighting their efficiency in front of goal.

In contrast, Chelsea were unable to break the 0.62 goal barrier, a statistic reflective of their attacking struggles on the day.

The result leaves Newcastle firmly in third place with two matches remaining — away to Arsenal and home to Everton. Just four more points will now mathematically ensure their return to Europe’s top table for the first time in over two decades.

For Chelsea, the defeat halts their recent momentum and leaves them fifth in the table, with Champions League qualification now hanging in the balance.
