Sinner stuns Djokovic to reach Wimbledon final against Alcaraz

Date:

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner delivered a commanding performance on Friday to defeat Novak Djokovic in straight sets and advance to the Wimbledon final, where he will face defending champion Carlos Alcaraz.

The 22-year-old Italian showcased his dominance on Centre Court, overcoming the seven-time Wimbledon champion with a 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 victory.

With this win, Sinner secured his spot in Sunday’s final — a much-anticipated clash against Alcaraz, who earlier defeated Taylor Fritz to book his ticket to the title match.

Sinner started strong, controlling the tempo in the opening two sets. Although Djokovic managed to go a break up in the third, Sinner responded with resilience, breaking the Serbian twice to seal the win. His movement on grass, once considered a weakness, appeared sharp and fluid throughout the match.

Djokovic, visibly struggling physically, appeared unable to keep up with Sinner’s relentless pace. While he showed determination by saving two match points late in the third set, the gap in performance between the two players was evident.

Despite battling on, Djokovic’s body language suggested he knew the end was near. He seemed unwilling to chase down certain shots, a rare sight for a competitor of his caliber. At 5-4 in the third set, Sinner stepped up to serve for the match and delivered under pressure.

Reflecting on the milestone, Sinner said, “When I was young and I watched Wimbledon, I would never have imagined I would play here in the final. I know how much work me and my team put in. My dad and brother arrived, which makes it even more special.”

His appearance in the final makes him the fifth man since 1995 to reach the championship match at all four Grand Slam events — joining the elite company of Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Andy Murray.

“Not bad company,” Sinner remarked with a smile as the Wimbledon crowd laughed along.

“It shows I’m growing as a player on all surfaces, which is important. I struggled a lot five years ago on this surface, I couldn’t really move very well. Now I’m moving much better. It’s all part of the process, I’m very happy. Me and my team are working every day with purpose so it means a lot to me to achieve this kind of thing.”

Sunday’s final promises a thrilling encounter between the world’s top two players — a battle not just for the Wimbledon crown but also for supremacy in a new generation of tennis greats.
