Slot’s Liverpool edge Bournemouth in 4-2 thriller

Liverpool’s Premier League title defence began in dramatic fashion on Friday night, as Arne Slot’s side overcame a spirited Bournemouth comeback to clinch a 4-2 victory at Anfield.

The champions appeared to be cruising when Hugo Ekitike marked his debut with a 37th-minute opener, before turning provider just after the break for Cody Gakpo to double the hosts’ advantage.

But Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth refused to wilt, with Antoine Semenyo netting twice in quick succession after the hour mark to level the contest and stun the home crowd.Slot reacted decisively, substituting debutant Florian Wirtz for Federico Chiesa, a move that proved decisive.

The Italian international struck in the 88th minute to restore Liverpool’s lead with his first goal in English football. Mohamed Salah then sealed the win deep into stoppage time, continuing his impeccable opening-day scoring record and dedicating his goal to the late Diogo Jota.
