Nigeria’s senior men’s national team, the Super Eagles, have dropped one position in the latest FIFA World Rankings released on Thursday, moving from 43rd to 44th globally.
On the continental scene, the Super Eagles are now ranked fifth. Morocco leads the African rankings at 12th globally, followed by Senegal (18th), Egypt (34th), and Algeria (36th).

Upcoming World Cup qualifying opponents Rwanda and South Africa are currently ranked 127th and 56th respectively. Rwanda moved up in the latest standings, while South Africa maintained their previous position.
Despite some strong performances in recent months, Nigeria’s ranking did not benefit. In May, they triumphed in the 2025 Unity Cup held in London, securing victories over Ghana and Jamaica. In June, they earned a 1-1 draw against Russia in an international friendly played in Moscow.
Even with these encouraging results, the team’s position dropped in the global standings.
Nigeria still holds the record as Africa’s highest-ever ranked national team, reaching fifth place globally in April 1994.
That same year, they made a historic debut at the FIFA World Cup in the United States, advancing to the Round of 16 after facing Argentina, Bulgaria, and Greece in the group stage.
Globally, there have been minimal changes at the summit. Argentina remains in first place, with Spain, France, England, and Brazil completing the top five in that order.
Portugal climbed one place to sixth, overtaking the Netherlands, who dropped to seventh. Belgium remained eighth, while Germany moved up to ninth, and Croatia returned to the top 10, displacing Italy, now ranked 11th.
The next FIFA Men’s World Ranking is scheduled for release on 18 September 2025.
