The Super Eagles are fully aware that their World Cup hopes are on the line as they face Rwanda today in Kigali.
With a loss spelling further damage to their already slim chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, the Nigerian squad has promised to leave everything on the pitch at Amahoro Stadium to secure a vital victory.
Currently sitting fifth in Group C with just three points, Nigeria must win today to reignite their campaign and move back into contention for the group’s sole World Cup qualification spot.
Rwanda, South Africa, and Benin Republic all lead with seven points after four matches, making today’s match a do-or-die affair for the Super Eagles.
A victory would provide a fresh boost to the Super Eagles’ aspirations, and in an effort to rally support, the Nigerian government has mobilized its citizens in Rwanda.
A delegation has already arranged for 500 match tickets for Nigerians in Rwanda to cheer on the team, alongside another 1,500 supporters expected to arrive in Kigali with drums and musical instruments to make their presence felt.
Vincent Okumagba, Chairman of the Nigerian Supporters Club, commended the efforts of the National Sports Commission (NSC) for organizing the trip and backing the team.
“We have no other option than to get the three points here in Kigali,” said Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong after the team’s morning training.

The Super Eagles have a strong desire to return to their winning ways, with Coach Eric Chelle pledging to bring back an attacking style of play.
“I want to play high-pressure football,” said Chelle, who understands the weight of expectations from Nigerian fans. “We need to work harder, and time is not always on the side of coaches, but we must take responsibility and deliver.”
Newcomer Papa Daniel Mustapha, who recently made his debut for the national team, is eager for a chance to prove himself in the high-stakes match.
The 23-year-old midfielder from Niger Tornadoes, who previously impressed with the Super Eagles B team, is hoping that luck will be on his side.
“If I get a chance, I’ll show Nigeria and the world what I can do,” he said from the team’s camp in Kigali.
Meanwhile, Atalanta forward and African Footballer of the Year, Ademola Lookman, is not underestimating the threat posed by Rwanda. “We know Rwanda is a good team with quality players,” Lookman said.
“But we also know we have the talent to beat anyone in Group C. The team is united and positive, and we’re all focused on achieving the same goal – to win.”
After today’s match in Kigali, the Super Eagles will return to Uyo’s Godswill Akpabio International Stadium for a crucial encounter with Zimbabwe, which is scheduled for just four days later.
These two fixtures are critical for the Super Eagles, who must turn their fortunes around after a disappointing start to their World Cup qualifying campaign.
