President Bola Tinubu has lauded Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, for their remarkable showing at the 2025 Women’s Afrobasket tournament, describing their “discipline, focus and team spirit” as a source of national pride.
The president’s remarks followed the team’s impressive victory over Senegal in the semi-final clash held in Côte d’Ivoire on Saturday.

Nigeria triumphed with a 75-68 win, overcoming a third-quarter deficit with a dominant final-period performance to book their spot in the final.
Reacting to the outcome, President Tinubu applauded the determination and consistency shown by the team throughout the tournament, describing their performance as a reflection of excellence and national character.
He also reserved praise for D’Tigress head coach, Rena Wakama, commending her for leading the team to greater heights and fostering a winning mentality.
The president reaffirmed his unwavering support for the squad as they chase a record-extending fifth straight title and what would be their seventh overall continental championship.D’Tigress will go head-to-head with Mali in Sunday’s final, scheduled to tip off at 7 pm.
Nigeria’s dominance in the competition remains unmatched in recent years. The team has not tasted defeat in the Women’s Afrobasket since October 2, 2015, when they fell to Cameroon, maintaining an unbroken winning streak for nearly a decade.
A win on Sunday would see Nigeria become the first nation to claim five consecutive Women’s Afrobasket titles.
