The Yobe State Government said that 34 villagers killed by Boko Haram in an attack on Mafa, a town in Tarmuwa Local Government Area have been buried.
The victims were laid to rest on Tuesday in Babangida, the local government’s headquarters.
The attack, which occurred on Sunday, also left several homes and shops destroyed and displaced hundreds of residents.
According to Dahiru Abdulsalam, Governor Mala Buni’s special adviser on security matters, the death toll stands at 34, with five people sustaining injuries.
Abdulsalam attributed the vulnerability of Mafa to its location, which makes it an easy target for Boko Haram insurgents. He emphasized that the reported figures are accurate and that no unauthorized individuals have visited the site since the attack.
The State government announced a donation of N30 million to the families of the victims. Deputy Governor Idi Gubana led a delegation to the burial ceremony to express condolences to the Emir of Jajere and the affected community.
To provide immediate relief to the displaced residents, the state government instructed the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to distribute shelter and food supplies. Governor Buni, deeply saddened by the incident, visited the Chief of Defence Staff to discuss long-term security measures for Mafa.
Gubana stressed the importance of deploying sufficient troops to protect Mafa, a vital trade hub located on the border of Borno and Yobe states. He expressed hope that increased military presence will prevent future attacks and ensure the safety of the local population.
