The Lisabi Festival, which celebrates Egba heritage and honours Lisabi Agbongbo Akala, a legendary hero who fought against oppression, held yesterday, Saturday, in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Themed ‘Ègbáliganza 2025’, the festival seamlessly blended cultural pride with modern style, showcasing the rich heritage of the Egba people.
According to The Cable, the festival also featured a grand finale with stunning fashion displays, highlighting traditional Ofi, Adire, and Afrocentric designs.
Prominent Nigerians, including ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, arrived at the event clad in luxurious attire, including aso-oke and agbadas.
Other attendees included Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun, Ladi Adebutu, 2023 governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, and Nollywood star Richard Mofe-Damijo.
The Alake of Egbaland and high chiefs graced the event wearing majestic regalia and coral beads.
Lisabi was a military organiser and farmer who united the Egba people against the Oyo Empire between 1775 and 1780. He freed them from paying royalties to the Alaafin of Oyo.
His bravery and leadership paved the way for the Egba people’s independence, and his legacy has continued to inspire unity and cultural pride.
The festival also serves as a powerful homecoming for Egba sons and daughters worldwide, allowing them to reconnect with their rich cultural heritage while boosting tourism in Ogun State and generating revenue for the government.
