The Lagos State Government has fired back at Comedian Debo Macaroni for calling out Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu over the bad state of roads in Lagos, with some Lagosians pointing at the condition of the Lekki-Epe Road.
Concerns have mounted in recent times over the state of the road filled with potholes that are giving commuters a hard time on the route.
The comedian via his handle, @mrmacaronii, on November 4, had called out the state governor over the state of the roads, asking him to do better.
He wrote, “Hello Mr Governor @jidesanwoolu. One of these days when you are not too busy with the very serious task of going to the airport in Abuja to welcome Mr President from an international trip, kindly take a drive around Lagos roads and let us know why the government continues to risk the lives of Lagosians.
“There are potholes on the roads causing accidents that are capable of destroying lives and properties.
Do better?”
“Lekki-Epe Expressway has turned into death traps, with so many potholes,” another user, @Allezamani, commented.
But when contacted, a commissioner who did not want to be quoted slammed Macaroni for calling out the governor despite the rejection of fees at the Lekki Toll Gate in the aftermaths of the 2020 EndSARS protest, saying this had led to paucity of funds for maintenance.
Some activists, during the October 20, 2024, EndSARS memorial protest, had also demanded that the Lekki Toll Gate be renamed ‘ENDSARS Bus Stop.’
A resident, Anuoluwa Abiade, who spoke with our reporter on Thursday about the state of the Lekki-Epe and Ajah road, lamented how traffic was worsening on the road due to huge potholes.
“From Chevron, Ikate, Elegushi, Igbo Efon, Agungi, Jakande routes, there are wide potholes. Vehicles don’t even want to ply some of the routes. It’s so bad,” he said.
But the commissioner, when speaking with our reporter, lamented that when the Lekki-Epe road was being maintained by the Lekki Concession Company, it was not that bad.
“When the LCC was maintaining that road, was it like that? And when you said you don’t want toll gate again, the LCC has no money to maintain it again. The contractors doing it, nobody is talking to them or asking them questions, but because somebody (Macaroni) puts it on social media and accused the governor, now it becomes an issue,” he lamented.
